50 Cent Artist Biography

50 cent (Curtis Jackson) was born Southside Jamaica, Queens. 50 Cent had a hard time from the begining, coming from a broken home with his mother, a drug dealer, being found dead when he was only eight.

His father left soon after the death of his mother and left 50's grandmother to look after him.

As a teenager, 50 Cent followed the lead of his mother and began dealing crack. This was until he got caught and went to prison, which was the first of many!

50 Cent then became a father and that seemed to put things into perspective for him. This was the mid- 90's and the begining of his rap music career.

His break came in 1996 when he met Run- D.M.C's Jam Master Jay who gave him a tape of beats and asked him to rap over it. 50 Cent then got his first contract.

This didn't get very far and 50 cent affiliated himself with Trackmasters, a commercially successful New-York based production duo (comprised of Poke and Tone) known for their work with such artists as Nas and Jay-Z.

With Trackmasters, 50 Cent began work on his debut album, Power of the Dollar. A trio of Singles preceded the album's proposed release: 'Your Life's on the Line', 'Thug Love (featuring Destiny's Child) and 'How to Rob'.

'How to Rob' attracted attention as he raped about how he would rob famous rappers. Whilst this controversial, open style of rapping brought initial success to 50, it would later come back to haunt him and his first brush with death came shortly after 'How to Rob' when he was stabbed at the Hit Factory studio in Manhattan.

Shortly afterward, on the 24th May 2000, just before Columbia was set to release 'Power of the Dollar', an assassin attempted to murder 50 in front of his grandmother's house in Queens, near where Jam master Jay would be fatally shot two and a half years later.

He then lost his deal with Columbian records. 2 years later, 50 returned to rap music. He formed a collective, G Unit, and began churning out mix-tape tracks, many of which were later compiled on Eminem's 'Guess Who's Back?' in 2002.

Eminem then signed up 50 Cent after the price entered into the million-plus figures. However, despite the bidding war, Eminem did sign 50 to a joint deal with Shady/Aftermath, the former label Eminem's, the latter, Dr Dre's. During the following months, 50 worked closely with Eminem and Dre who co-produced his debut album, 'Get Rich or Die Tryin'. Before this debuted however, Eminem introduced 50 on the 8 Mile soundtrack. In 2002, 50 relased a former underground record, 'Wanksta' which became a runaway hit, preparing nicely for the hit 'In da Club'.

Whilst the success of 50 Cent's music career was at it's highest, he was making headlines for others reasons too. Most infamously, he was tied to Jam Master Jay's shooting in 2002. Furthermore he was jailed on New Year's Eve 2002 for gun possession.

Album Release Date:

50 Cent is moving up the release date of his new album The Massacre, due to Internet piracy concerns. The Massacre, the highly anticipated release from 50 Cent will now be released 3rd March instead of 8th March.
"50 Cent is linked so closely to the streets that we have to react quickly when his album surfaces illegally," says Interscope marketing executive Steve Berman in a press release. "The best way to combat piracy problems is by getting the real version into stores with all the exclusive content and special packaging that comes with it." E-online
This marks the third time the disc's debut has been changed. The set, originally titled St. Valentine's Day Massacre, was originally scheduled to arrive in stores 15th Feb. Last month, Interscope pushed back the release to 8th March.
